Nelson Island, Five Islands

Nelson Island is the largest of the group of islands called the Five Islands and is probably best known for being the arrival point for over 114,000 indentured labourers that came from India starting in the 1840s. But did you also know that, in the 1930s, Jews who were fleeing the Holocaust were housed there and then it was eventually converted into the detention centre where Uriah Buzz Butler and George Weeks were held? Now visitors can explore the museum containing unique historical artefacts and picnic on the lush grounds.
