Japanese Lantern Craft
Similar to Japan’s cherry blossoms, the pretty flowers of our pink poui trees are a lovely spectacle. While yellow poui trees are native to Trinidad & Tobago, the pink poui was possibly introduced from Venezuela where it is the national tree.

Supplies
- blue bristol board (8×11”)
- brown paint
- paintbrush
- pink or yellow crepe paper or kite paper
- glue stick or school glue
- scissors
- sticky tape
Instructions
Step 1: Paint tree branches on bristol board. Allow to dry completely.
Step 2: Cut six pieces of crepe paper or kite paper about 18” to 24” in length. Turn branch painting face down. Use a glue stick to add glue at the bottom of the paper and place all six strips of paper along the bottom of your bristol board. Turn your painted branch face up.
Step 3: Cut out about 30 squares from your crepe or kite paper. Scrunch up one of the paper squares to make a poui flower. Dab scrunched up square on a glue stick and place along painted branch.
Step 4: Continue scrunching up paper squares and glueing them all over the branch until it is full of poui flowers.
Step 5: Bend bristol board into a cylinder and connect the ends together with pieces of sticky tape.
Step 6: Cut a length of bristol board 1” x 8.5”. Add sticky tape to one end of the strip and attach it inside the top of the lantern. Add another piece of tape on the other end of the strip and attach it to the opposite side of the top of the lantern to create your handle.
Your lanterns are ready to hang!
